Self-Preservation

The meaning of Self-preservation has filled my spirit this morning. Definition: Self-preservation is a behavior or set of behaviors that ensure the survival of an organism. It is universal among all living organisms. Pain and fear are integral parts of this mechanism. Pain motivates the individual to withdraw from damaging situations, to protect a damaged body part while it heals, and to avoid similar experiences in the future.
Knowing this shows me that self-preservation is human nature. Therefore protecting yourself is a must. This also goes for your emotional and mental state as well. Sometimes you have to remove yourself from another person or situation because it will damage your emotional and mental health. Emotional and mental abuse or neglect can affect you just as much as physically at times. These are hidden scars that you can carry around your whole life. Thus it is a must that you must remove yourself from anything that will harm you in this way as well. A lot of people are in abusive relationships and don’t realize it because there are no physical scars. You have to open your eyes and see that you are in danger.
Dealing with unnecessary stress can also lead to depression and anxiety that will damage your mental and emotional health. You must reevaluate what is necessary and move accordingly. Your overall health must be protected. Again self-preservation is a must to survive this world.
